Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) for a Make and Take Rain Barrel Workshop on Tuesday, June 28, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Apple Valley Senior Center. A rain barrel is a simple, high-impact way to save water and protect water quality in lakes and rivers. The cost of materials for building your own rain barrel is only $35, thanks to donated barrels from Coca-Cola Refreshments of Eagan. Pre-registration is required.
Please register to attend a free Landscaping for Clean Water presentation. See dozens of beautiful, inspirational, and affordable garden designs using native plants and helping clean our waters. After attending you can sign up to receive design and installation assistance. Some Dakota County residents will qualify for a $250 grant to install their new gardens.
What’s one of the simplest, high-impact ways to save water and help protect our watershed? Using a make & take rain barrel.
The workshop will begin with a presentation on how home lawn and garden practices impact our waters and how we can make a difference. Next we’ll discuss the watershed-friendly benefits of rain barrels in more detail, then review how to build, incorporate, install and maintain them.
With guidance from Friends of the Mississippi River staff, participants will then build their very own rain barrel to take home following the workshop. Participants will receive the necessary parts ($35 per kit) and be guided through the process of converting used syrup barrels from Coca-Cola into a rain barrel to take home and install.

Lawns to Legumes Pollinator Talk April 12 with Scott SWCD
The Scott Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is excited to host speaker Dr. Elaine Evans to talk about what’s happening with Minnesota’s state bee: The rusty patched bumble bee.
The Scott SWCD has been awarded funding through the State’s Lawns to Legumes Program to restore critical habitat for the endangered rusty patched bumble bee. Scott SWCD staff will give an overview of funding opportunities while Dr. Elaine Evans from the University of Minnesota discusses why these bees are so important.
This free educational webinar will go over:
- How to identify the rusty patched bumble bee and their role as a critical pollinator species
- The life cycle and behaviors of the rusty patched bumble bee
- What’s being done to protect them
- How you can help expand their habitat and beautify your property with Lawns to Legumes grants
Dr. Elaine Evans holds a PhD in Entomology and works as an Associate Extension Professor at the University of Minnesota Bee Lab in the Department of Entomology. They handle questions related to bee conservation and are currently monitoring the population of the endangered rusty patched bumble bee.
In-person Landscaping for Clean Water Introduction Class
Join us for a one hour IN-PERSON class at Ritter Farm Park in Lakeville! Learn how native plants, raingardens, and shoreline plantings can bring pollinator and water quality benefits to your yard. The class is FREE and is a pre-requisite to taking part in the hands-on design course and grant program! Learn more.
Meet-a-Stream Day with Minnesota Trout Unlimited
Join MNTU education specialist and long time fly angler, Evan Griggs, at his favorite MNTU habitat project sites. Tour the project site to see how habitat work benefits the stream. Learn about stream ecology by sampling macroinvertebrates to determine water quality and see what the trout are eating. Then we’ll practice our fly fishing skills, like casting and knot tying, before heading out to try and catch some trout.
Our programs are tailored for kids, families, and newer anglers. This is a great way to explore some new fishing spots, understand how our habitat projects benefit trout, and grow your fishing skills! All gear provided and no fishing license or trout stamp are required for participants at these events. For ages 10+, an adult must accompany their minor(s) at all times. If looking to register more than 3 people or have questions, contact Evan Griggs, tic.mntu@gmail.com.
